I first encountered Richard Partridge Cabernet Sauvignion in the challenging 1998 vintage. That year the wine scored 94 Wine Spectator. Needless to say that the 1999 eclipsed that vintage in quality. I have sampled the 2000 and it is extraordinary: Deep saturated purple, Blackberry, cassis, coffee, anise on the nose, the palate is dense crushed berries, tea and chocolate. I had this at the Super Tasting in October and have since enjoyed it on several occasions. It's a great "secret" wine to tell your fanatical wine friends about. It's a Napa Valley Cab from a vineyard that sells to some of the big NAME producers like Stag's Leap, Hess, Atalon, Lokoya, Cardinale, etc. They were written up in the WS Cab issue back in 2000. The best thing is the price. Getting this for $30 with the case discount is a steal. Get it now while it's still unknown. Sock a couple bottles away so you can impress your friends ten years from now that you were in on the secret from the start. Salute. 12/17/2002 2:49:40 PM Paradigm Cab Sauv rating: Not Rated Had this over Thanksgiving ... Had this over Thanksgiving in a lineup that included Jordan and Silver Oak. I was totally surprised at how smooth and tasty this was. The only thing better than the intial sweetness was the aftertaste. It just got better and better. I've enjoyed wines much more pricey than this, but Paradigm really held it's own with the big boys. It wasn't until I got home and checked that I figured out that it was so affordable. I'll get a case and let company think I'm breaking out the good stuff. I'd give this ** out of five. Parker is way off on this as he usually is with Italian reds. Parker is great for Bordeauz and I almost always agree with him. I remeber he gave a 1990 Ruffino Chianti Classico Riserva Gold Label a high rating. It was terrible. He also loved the Coltubuono Sangiovetto, which was unbalanced and overly alcoholic and astringent. He also loved the Collosorbo Brunello which is one of the few disappointing 97 Brunello's I've tried and I've tasted about 20. This Barolo was too watery for my taste. It also had a limited finished and was a bit too earthy for my taste. Not very refined and lacking in fruit. Maybe it will get better with time. I really think Brunello has clearly eclipsed Barolo/Barbaresco for Italy's best wines. 12/4/2002 10:01:04 PM Paul Hobbs Agustina Res Chard rating: Not Rated My wife & I were just fortunate ... My wife & I were just fortunate to have dinner with Paul Hobbs this Sunday. His Cuvee Agustina(named after his daughter) is outstanding. He uses only naturally occurring yeast in the fermentation process. This gives the wine its character & style. Its powerful but elegant with a long complex finish. For a big wine it does not smack you on the head but is smooth & silky. Another great wine is his Cuvee Agustina Pinot Noir. The fruit is grown in the Hyde vineyard, however what makes the C.A. so much more intense not only in appearance but taste is the clones that they are grown from. Check this one out as well its over the top. Another small note he just broke ground for his own winery in San Sepestipole (sp?) and had his first harvest (Pinot Noir) from another winery that he is the owner. Nothing too bold, very understated even to the the most sensitive of palates 6/27/2002 7:57:24 AM Siro Pacenti Rosso Di Montalcino rating: Not Rated What of the review of the ... What of the review of the 2000 vintage? I have been collecting and enjoying wine for over 20 years and have seen many a wine that has been exceptional in a particular vintage and thoroughly unimpressive in subsequent vintages. This new technique of posting reviews of an impressive vintage to support sales of a different vintage is, in my opinion, totally self serving to the retailer and useless to the consumer. Only a novice or a gambler would place any stock in this practice, the experienced wine lover knows each vintage is unique unto itself. I moderated the Best of Show panel for the Hilton Head Island Wine Festival (SC). Saddleback Cellars won Best of Show Red. Wineries and distributors entered about 1000 wines for judging. About half were reds. The Saddleback Cellars had everything anyone could want in a Cab S. I can not phantom such a low score. I scored it 95 points (we actually used a modified Davis scoring system). The panel as a whole scored it about 93+ points. The wine has an unbelieveable mouth feel and texture, silky integration of tannins, structure and a 45 second finish. Twenty-four reds were nominiated for best of show. We selected 6 out of three flights for a final screening. The Saddleback Cellar average about 3-5 points higher than its closest competitor on the panel. Many better known wines did not make it into the final screening. The other wines in the final screening were all outstanding in their own right. If you buy and cellar this wine, you will not be sorry.
